Short description of the trip

Day one

LBe mesmerised by the captivating beauty of the Danube Delta on a memorable boat trip that will take you through some of the most picturesque places of the Danube Delta. On the first day of your trip, departing from Tulcea, you will sail through the Mila 36 Channel, continuing your journey through the Sireasa Channel and the Șontea Channel, you will have the opportunity to admire the picturesque and wild landscapes surrounded by reeds and papyrus. These areas are home to numerous migratory and resident bird species, giving you an authentic insight into life in the Danube Delta.

Uhe ultimate destination is Lake Nebunu, a haven for migratory and resident birds. Here, you will be spoilt with spectacular views and an impressive variety of bird species, such as swans and wild ducks, in their natural habitat.

CThe journey continues to Lake Băclănești and Lake Fortuna, where you can admire magnificent scenery and a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Here, you will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature in a charming and adventurous walk.

Sailing through the Olguța Channel, you will have the opportunity to explore the locality of Mila 23 and the Old Danube, giving you the chance to discover the authentic traditions and culture of the Danube Delta. With the help of fast boats we reach Stipoc Monastery which is the only monastery in the Danube Delta Reserve and is located on the Stipoc Gorge, halfway between Chilia and Mila 23. It is also known as the Hermitage of St Athanasius.
LThe monastery has only 6 monks, including the abbot of the monastery. Access to the hermitage is by water only. From the shore, you can't quite realise how beautiful this monastery - or as it is also called - St Athanasius' Hermitage - is. The little wooden church in the courtyard of the monastery is dedicated to St Athanasius. It is built in Moldavian style.
As you enter the courtyard, you are overwhelmed by such beauty. It's a big courtyard full of flowers, a little paradise somewhere you wouldn't expect. As you walk further into the courtyard, you're intoxicated by the fragrance of the flowers. It's amazing what a handful of monks could do.
Biserica is built entirely of wood and is fairly new. It's only 15 years old. The wood is very carefully worked. There are many carved motifs in the wood. It's one of the most beautiful little wooden churches I've seen. The name of the church is St Athanasius and it was consecrated only three years ago. The place of worship is shepherded in the Old Orthodox rite (Staroveri). They still celebrate holidays in the Old Julian style, just like the Russian church, the difference is that they do it not in Slavonic but in Romanian. This church belongs to an autonomous metropolia, based in Slătioara, Rășca commune, Suceava county. We return to Mila23 of course on the way we capture the splendid sunset, we retire for accommodation and dinner.
    The next day

Phe highlight of the four-day trip with the MAR and speedboat is the Letea Forest, the land at the headwaters. The Letea Forest originated about 6000 years ago, after the waters of the Black Sea receded. It's no ordinary forest, because instead of soil, plants grow on sea-bottom sand. The centuries-old oak trees in the Letea Forest are another tourist attraction. One of them is over 780 years old, others are 400-500 years old, but only two of these trees can still be seen by visitors on the tourist routes. In Letea Forest, in addition to sand dunes and centuries-old oaks, you can see the famous wild horses. They can't always be spotted, because they don't care what visitors want and wander around outside the reserve, in 2025 they were removed from the reserve on the grounds that they were destroying the vegetation. Experts estimate that there are about 2000 wild horses in the Letea area. They were abandoned by locals during the communist period, either because they had nothing to feed them or after the ”infectious anaemia” disease was declared, which led many horse owners to abandon their animals. The horses have multiplied over the years and it is now estimated that there are between 3,000 and 5,000 horses in the whole reserve and almost 2,000 in the Letea area. We recommend a visit to Letea Forest, the spectacle of nature is extraordinary. It is important to protect it, so that this wonder of nature can be visited by our children or grandchildren, with the same enjoyment that the reserve provides us. Here we can have a traditional fish lunch prepared by the locals.

Third day

Uhe last stronghold to conquer of the four days is Sulina , a harbour town on the Danube and the Black Sea at the eastern extremity of Romania and the continental European Union, in the Danube Delta, at the point where the Sulina arm flows into the Black Sea. It has a population of 4,601 inhabitants. Sulina is not directly connected to Romania's road network and can only be reached by water, either on the Danube or on the Black Sea.
Sulina, the city at the Danube's mouth into the Black Sea, is famous for its uniqueness: it is an isolated town, accessible only by water, with a diverse population (Russian Lvivs, Ukrainians, Turks, Romanians), a rich maritime heritage (Genovez Lighthouse, Maritime Cemetery- sunken ships), a history of a prosperous free port (European Danube Commission) and a unique „end of the world” atmosphere where nature and local traditions rule, where you can visit the Old Sulina Lighthouse, the Sailors' Cemetery, Sulina Beach and the Waterfront. Here you can savour a range of exciting experiences and enjoy the hospitality of the locals. Sulina is a unique destination, a place where time seems to flow differently, combining the beauty of the natural beauty of the Delta with a rich history and a specific culture of a border port.

PStarting from the picturesque town of Sulina, on board the boat or the Corsair boat you will witness a memorable journey to the mouth of the Danube, so we will get as close as possible to the point where the Danube flows into the Black Sea.

On insert we will return to our accommodation in Mila23 without missing the sunset on the Ligheanca lake!

Fourth day

DIn Mila23 , after breakfast, we will move to the Eracle canal and cross the lakes of Trei Iezere, La Amiază and Bogdaproste where you will encounter the tranquillity and beauty of these wild lakes. Here you can observe a rich variety of aquatic birds including cormorants and egrets, pelicans, swans that find shelter in the lush vegetation of the Delta.Returning to Mila23 on the Old Danube, we have lunch and continue to Tulcea harbour, following the routes we descended three days before.

În the end, the MAR boat stops in beautiful Tulcea, with hearts full of memories and the desire to come back for more adventures in the marvellous Danube Delta.
