Strictly protected areas in the Danube Delta
Strictly protected areas in the Danube Delta are restricted areas, included in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve - DDBBR), designed to conserve unique natural ecosystems and biodiversity. These areas occupy about 9% of the RBDD territory and are protected to maintain the natural conditions of plant and animal species and their habitats.
Strictly protected areas include:
Rosca-Buhaiova: A complex of ponds and lakes harbouring the largest colony of common pelicans in Europe.
Letea: The Letea Forest area, considered the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe, is home to rare orchids and birds that prefer terrestrial areas and meadows.
Grindul and Lake Raducu: Located in the centre of the maritime delta, it is a fully protected area, declared strictly protected in 2000.
Crazy Lake: A strictly protected area of importance for the conservation of aquatic habitats and specific fauna.
Grindul and Caraorman Forest: An area comprising a forest ecosystem specific to the Delta, important for biodiversity conservation.
Soars - Murighiol: An area of importance for the conservation of wader bird colonies.
Erenciuc: An area of importance for the conservation of arin species.
Popina Island: An island in Lake Razelm, important for migratory bird species and the presence of rare species such as the black widow.
Sacalin - Zătoane: An area of importance for the conservation of aquatic habitats and specific fauna.
Periteașca - Leahova: A staging and feeding area for migratory birds such as red-breasted geese, pelicans, ducks and black-necked stilts.
Chubby Head: An area of importance for the conservation of bird species such as the great egret and black stonechat.
Wolf Grind: An area of conservation importance for terrestrial ecosystems, home to the golden jackal.
Chituc Grind: An area with small lakes, important for winter birds.
Rotundu Lake: An area of importance for aquatic habitat conservation.
Lake Potcoava: An area of importance for aquatic habitat conservation.
Belciug Lake: An area of importance for aquatic habitat conservation.
Ceaplace Island: An area with colonies of crested pelicans.
