Protected areas
The strictly protected areas in the Danube Delta include a number of 20 natural areaswhich cover an area of 50.904 hectares (about 8,7% of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve). These areas are specifically conserved to protect the Delta's unique natural ecosystems, both terrestrial and aquatic.
With little human intervention, they are true sanctuaries of biodiversity and essential landmarks for eco-tourism, research and conservation. They can only be visited on authorised trails and under strictly regulated conditions to maintain the natural balance.
