Whiskered tern

The White-cheeked Parakeet is a migratory bird, travelling between nesting sites in Europe and wintering sites in Africa or South Asia. Its behaviour is often social, with large colonies, especially during migration. They nest in marshy areas, building nests in vegetation, usually on grassy beaches or small islands. The female lays 3-4 eggs, which incubate for 20-25 days, and the young become fledglings after about 4 weeks.

Description and how to observe Whiskered tern:

The Whiskered tern also known by its scientific name Chlidonias hybrida - Whiskered tern, is a medium-sized waterfowl with an elegant appearance. It has a predominantly white plumage with a hint of grey on the wings and a black head distinguished by very distinctive white cheeks. The legs are slender and black in colour. This bird favours lake habitats, where it can be seen especially during the nesting season, gracefully flying over the water or sitting on overgrown beaches.

To spot the Whiskered tern, it's best to get close to nesting water, especially in spring and summer when it's most active.

What it feeds on Whiskered tern:

The diet of the Whiskered tern consists mainly of insects, crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates, which it captures from the water in flight or picks up from the water's surface. It is a very active foraging bird, with the ability to fly fast and dive to catch prey.

Threats:

The Whiskered tern faces several threats, the most notable of which are habitat destruction through wetland drainage, water pollution and human interference such as tourism and construction near nesting sites. Climate change also affects migration and the availability of favourable habitats.

Ecological role:

The Whiskered tern plays an important ecological role in aquatic ecosystems, helping to control populations of insects and other invertebrates. Its presence also indicates the health of freshwater ecosystems and impacts the biological diversity of the area.

More information on Chlidonias hybrida:

The Whiskered tern is a protected species and it is possible to observe it in various natural areas in the Danube Delta. Birdwatching enthusiasts are advised to respect environmental regulations and avoid disturbing nesting birds. Thanks to its beauty and interesting behaviour, the White-cheeked Parakeet is a special attraction for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
