Tulcea's Independence Monument is a symbol of Romanian history and national unity. Situated on Hora hill, the highest point of the city, it offers a breathtaking view of the Danube Delta and the city.
The foundation stone of the monument was laid by Prince Carol I in 1879 during his visit to Tulcea. Originally, the monument was dedicated to the commemoration of the annexation of Dobrogea to the Romanian state. In its original form, the monument consisted of an obelisk made of Ravenna granite, raised on a plinth with two steps and a pedestal. At the base of the obelisk there were two sculptures: a dorobanet with a weapon on his shoulder and an eagle with spread wings, symbolising bravery and freedom.
Unfortunately, the monument was destroyed during the First World War. It was rebuilt in 1932, but without the two sculptures.
The Independence Monument in Tulcea is a must-see destination for those who visit this city. It is a place steeped in history and symbolism, which will impress you by its location and the panorama it offers.
