The Osprey
Description and how to observe The Osprey:
The Osprey is a medium-sized bird of prey, 50-66 cm long with an impressive wingspan of up to 180 cm. The feathers on the back and wings are dark brown, while the underparts are white, marking a strong contrast. The head has a distinctive black mask across the eyes and a slightly visible white crest. The best places to observe this species are in the quiet areas of the Danube Delta, where the water is clear and the Osprey can be seen soaring high in the air or diving for fish.
What it feeds on The Osprey:
Fish is almost exclusively the diet of the Osprey, favouring small and medium-sized species such as pike, perch and carp. Spotting them while hunting is a spectacle in itself, thanks to their remarkable speed and accuracy.
Threats:
The species faces multiple threats, including habitat destruction, water pollution and disturbance from human activities. The use of pesticides and their accumulation in the food chain can also affect the bird's reproductive success.
