Mute Swan

Description and how to observe Mute Swan:
The Mute Swan is one of the most elegant birds of the Danube Delta, easily recognisable by its completely white plumage, long gracefully curved S-shaped neck, and orange beak with a black bump at the base. It is a large bird with a wingspan that can exceed 2 metres. It can easily be seen in areas of calm water - lakes, canals or pools - where it hovers quietly or feeds close to the shore.
What it feeds on Mute Swan:
The Mute Swan is herbivorous, feeding mainly on submerged aquatic plants, algae and grasses, which it plucks with its long beak as it dips its head underwater. Occasionally it may also eat small aquatic invertebrates, but these make up a very small percentage of its diet.
Threats:
The main threats include: destruction of natural habitats by drainage and construction, water pollution, collisions with power lines, human disturbance during the nesting season and, in some cases, illegal hunting.
Ecological role:
More information about Cygnus olor:
Although they may look quiet and peaceful, Mute Swans can become extremely protective around their nests or chicks. A protected bird under European and Romanian law, the Danube Delta provides an essential refuge for the breeding and survival of this impressive species.
