Grey Heron

The grey heron is a partly migratory species: northern populations migrate southwards in winter, but many remain in Romania in winter, especially in the Delta, where the waters rarely freeze completely. They nest in colonies, usually in trees, sometimes in the neighbourhood of other colonial birds (cormorants, egrets). The nest is built of twigs and the female lays 3-5 eggs. It is a silent bird outside the nesting period, but may make harsh, guttural sounds when alarmed.

Description and how to observe Grey Heron:

The grey heron is a tall, elegant bird with predominantly grey-grey plumage, a long slender neck, and a long, pointed, yellow bill. Its broad wings have a slow, graceful flight characteristic of the species. In the Danube Delta it can often be seen solitary, in marshy areas, on the edges of canals or on low islets, sitting motionless waiting for prey.

What it feeds on Grey Heron:

It is an opportunistic predator that feeds mainly on fish, but also on frogs, insects, snakes, water mice and even baby birds. It catches prey with a swift movement of its beak, after standing still or slowly treading water with remarkable patience.

Threats:

Although a relatively adaptable species, the grey herring is affected by water pollution, intensive fishing, destruction of wetland habitats and disturbance caused by human activities (boating, uncontrolled tourism). In some regions, it is also affected by prolonged drought, which reduces food sources.

Ecological role:

The grey heron plays an important role in the balance of aquatic ecosystems, helping to control fish and amphibian populations. Through its predatory behaviour, it maintains the health of prey populations by removing weak or diseased individuals.

More information on Ardea cinerea:

The grey heron is a protected species in Romania and the European Union and can be seen in the Danube Delta all year round, making it one of the stars of birdwatching tours. With careful observation and patience, this "hunter of the waters" can be a fascinating spectacle of wildlife in the Danube Delta.
