Common Sandpiper

It is a migratory species, which arrives in the Danube Delta in spring (April-May) and leaves in autumn for tropical Africa. They prefer to nest on the ground, in hidden places close to water, usually under low vegetation. The nest is a simple depression in the ground where the female lays 4 eggs. It is a solitary nesting bird, but can be seen in small groups during migration.

Description and how to observe Common Sandpiper:

The Common Sandpiper is a small bird, about 20 cm long, with an olive-brown back and white underparts. It is easily recognisable by its bouncy gait and rapid tail movements. It can be seen especially on the sandy or stony banks of canals and lakes in the Danube Delta, where it wanders singly or in pairs, often flying at low altitudes with its wings arched and emitting a characteristic whistling sound.

What it feeds on Common Sandpiper:

It feeds on aquatic insects, larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs, which it forages for on the banks, in the mud or among the rocks. It is mainly active in the mornings and evenings, using its slender, sharp beak to catch prey.

Threats:

The main threats to the Common Sandpiper include habitat loss due to hydro-engineering, water pollution and human disturbance on nesting sites. Climate change may also affect migration routes and access to foraging.

Ecological role:

Common Sandpiper contributes to the balance of the aquatic ecosystem by controlling insect and invertebrate populations. It is also a bio-indicator of wetland health and its presence signals a well-preserved natural habitat.

More information about Actitis hypoleucos:

The species is protected at European level under the Birds Directive and is part of the Natura 2000 network. In the Danube Delta, it can be seen mainly in quiet areas away from intense tourism. Keen observers are encouraged to use binoculars and respect the tranquillity of the habitat.
