Black redstart

The Black redstart is a migratory bird, arriving in Romania in the warmer months from April to September. During the breeding season, males make their presence known by their songs, attracting females and marking their territory. The roosts build their nests in hidden areas, between rocks, tree hollows or other safe hiding places, protecting their eggs from predators. The chicks hatch around 12-14 days after the eggs are laid and are cared for by both parents, who provide the food they need to develop and learn to fly.

Description and how to observe Black redstart:

The Black redstart's elk, known scientifically as Phoenicurus ochruros - Black redstartis a small, active bird with a distinctive colouring. Males have bluish-grey feathers on the head and back, a deep reddish-orange breast and a reddish-brown tail, which gives it its name. Females are more subdued in colour, with shades of grey-brown. These birds are very agile and can be seen in short flight over open, stony ground. In the Danube Delta, they can be found in areas with low vegetation, especially near the water, where they forage for food. They are an alert and often secretive bird that requires patience.

What it feeds on Black redstart:

The Black redstart is an insectivorous bird with a varied diet that includes small insects, larvae, spiders and occasionally berries. In the Danube Delta, it feeds on insects available in the vegetation of the area and near the water, and is adapted to hunt for food quickly due to its energetic behaviour.

Threats:

The main threats to the Black redstart include loss of natural habitat due to human activities, climate change affecting its migration routes and pollution. In addition, pesticide use can reduce the number of insects, the species' main food source, jeopardising its long-term survival.

Ecological role:

The Black redstartt's larch plays an important role in the Danube Delta ecosystem, helping to control insect populations and thus maintain the natural balance. As an insect predator, it helps to reduce pests in the vegetation of the area, and in turn is a food source for larger predators, thus contributing to local biodiversity.
