Squacco Heron

Description and how to observe Squacco Heron:
This medium-sized bird has a distinctive appearance, especially in the breeding season, when it has golden-yellow plumage and long decorative feathers on its head and neck. In flight, its contrasting white wings make it easily recognisable. It can be seen in the wetlands of the Danube Delta, especially near canals, reedy lakes and marshes, where it sits motionless or moves slowly in search of food.
What it feeds on Squacco Heron:
It is an opportunistic predator, feeding on small fish, frogs, aquatic insects, crustaceans and sometimes even snakes or mice. It catches its prey by standing still and attacking quickly when the opportunity arises, a typical lizard behaviour.
Threats:
Although it is a protected species, the Squacco Heron is vulnerable to habitat loss due to the drying up of wetlands, water pollution and disturbance caused by human activities such as uncontrolled tourism or intensive fishing. Climate change also affects foraging resources and migration timing.
Ecological role:
More information on Ardeola ralloides:
This species is protected by national and European legislation and is included in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive. The Danube Delta is one of the most important nesting sites for this species in Europe, which is why the conservation of its natural habitat is vital.
