Old Sulina Lighthouse Museum

Sulina

A journey through the history of Danube navigation

Old Lighthouse in Sulina, now a museum, is a historical monument bearing the imprint of an era when the Danube was a vital artery of European trade. Situated about 2.5 kilometres from the present Black Sea shore, the lighthouse was a silent witness to the evolution of navigation and the development of Sulina.

A bit of history

Built probably in the early 19th century, the lighthouse was originally under the administration of the Ottoman Empire. In 1879 it came under the European Danube Commission, which managed and maintained it until 1939.

After a period of decline, the lighthouse has been restored and, since 2003, it has been organised as a museum. Today, visitors can discover a rich collection of documents, photographs and artefacts illustrating the history of Sulina and the lighthouse, as well as the life and work of some of the city's most important personalities, such as the writer Eugeniu P. Botez (Jean Bart) and the conductor George Georgescu.
