Situated on Hora hill, the highest point of the city, it offers a breathtaking view of the Danube Delta and the city.

A bit of history

The foundation stone of the monument was laid by Prince Carol I in 1879 during his visit to Tulcea. Originally, the monument was dedicated to the commemoration of the annexation of Dobrogea to the Romanian state. In its original form, the monument consisted of an obelisk made of Ravenna granite, raised on a plinth with two steps and a pedestal. At the base of the obelisk there were two sculptures: a dorobanet with a weapon on his shoulder and an eagle with spread wings, symbolising bravery and freedom.

Unfortunately, the monument was destroyed during the First World War. It was rebuilt in 1932, but without the two sculptures.

Why visit the Independence Monument?

Symbol of unity: The monument is a symbol of national unity and heroism of the Romanian people.

Spectacular views: From the Hora Hillock, you will enjoy an unforgettable view of the Danube Delta and Tulcea.

Historical importance: The monument marks an important moment in the history of Romania and Dobrogea.

Place to relax: You can spend some pleasant moments admiring the landscape and reflecting on history.

What can you see in the area?

The ruins of Aegyssus: Near the monument are the ruins of the ancient fortress of Aegyssus, which offer a different perspective on the history of the region.

Monument Park: A beautiful park has been laid out around the monument, ideal for a stroll.

Useful information

Address: Colnicul Hora, Tulcea

Access: You can easily reach the monument on foot or by car.

Orar: Access is free at any time of the day.

The Independence Monument in Tulcea is a must-see destination for those who visit this city.
