Trip route

Tulcea – Maliuc – Mila 23 – Letea – Tulcea

Short description of the trip

Step into a place that's more than a destination - it's a revelation.

The Danube Delta doesn't reveal itself to just anyone. Here, the birds come on their own, light flows gently over the reeds, and silence speaks louder than rushed guides. This is not a simple excursion. It's an experience crafted for those who know how to wait, observe, and truly feel nature.

This 5-day/4-night wildlife photography tour combines two spectacular worlds: the canals, lakes, and reed beds of the Danube Delta with the unique Letea area — a traditional village, the Letea Forest, sand dunes, saltpans, steppe birds, and wild horses photographed in the warm sunset light.

This is a tour created for photographers, birdwatching enthusiasts, and nature lovers who are not looking for mass tourism, but an authentic, slow, ethical, and profound experience.

Local guidance, real experience and ethical photography

The tour is led by Florin Stavarache – a local guide, ornithologist, biologist, and wildlife photographer, with over 20 years of field experience in the Danube Delta, Dobrogea, and other wild areas of Romania.

Florin grew up near these places and knows the Delta not just as a tourist destination, but as a living, changing space, where light, wind, water levels, and bird behaviour dictate each day.

On this tour, we don't chase subjects or force wildlife encounters. We read nature, wait for the right moment, and photograph what the Delta naturally offers.

The philosophy of Just Wildlife Tours is simple:
Small groups, low impact, ethical photography and real experiences away from mass tourism.

What does this special tour do

  • Maximum 6 participants – intimate group, quiet and space for photography.
  • Low-profile photo boat – ideal for water-level shots and intimate perspectives.
  • Sunrise and sunset photo sessions – during the best light.
  • A day dedicated to the Letea area – an authentic village, a strictly protected forest, dunes, salt marshes, and wild horses.
  • Specialised guidance – not just „where we're going”, but why we're going there, when, how, and what behaviour we're aiming for.
  • An ethical approach – no baiting, no distress for birds, no forced scenes.
  • Comprehensive photographic experience – birds, mammals, landscapes, habitat, details and visual stories.

It's not just a photo tour.
It's an encounter with the wild, at its own pace.

What you will photograph

In the Danube Delta

The sessions in the Danube Delta take place mainly from a low-profile photo boat, on channels, lakes, reed beds, colonies, quiet banks, and places where bird activity is influenced by light, wind, and water levels.

Possible species:

  • Curly pelican and common pelican
  • Yellow heron, night heron, red heron, grey heron and dwarf heron
  • egret, cormorant, ibis and spoonbill
  • kingfisher, terns, gulls and waders
  • hawks and other birds of prey
  • occasional: otter, wildcat, raccoon dog, wild boar or muskrat

We move slowly and discreetly, with the engine switched off whenever possible, to preserve the tranquility of the place and to photograph the birds without putting any pressure on them.

The aim is not just to collect species, but to build a visual story: portraits, birds in flight, habitat shots, morning light, reflections on water, natural behaviours and unrepeatable moments.

In the Letea area

The Letea Forest adds a completely different dimension to this tour. Here the Delta changes: sand dunes, salt marshes, open areas, a traditional village, and one of the most spectacular strictly protected forests in Romania appear.

On the route to Letea and in the salt marsh area, we will also look for and photograph species such as:

  • Rusty viper
  • brine shrimp
  • Bottle opener
  • Leg brace
  • whistles, fugacious, marsh warblers and other waders
  • Evening breeze
  • slopes, caves and valleys
  • Woodchat shrike and black-fronted shrike

In spring, the salt marsh area is extremely interesting, with temporary water accumulations, sandy areas, and perfect habitats for birds migrating, feeding, or nesting.

Travel in the Letea area is done by safari-type vehicle, which allows us to cover more habitats and to take photographs without disturbing the wildlife.

The Letea Forest, the traditional village and the wild horses

After the morning session, we will explore Letea Forest, a strictly protected area, famous for its ancient oak trees, sand dunes, and rare vegetation.

Here we can take photos:

  • old foresters
  • sand dune
  • Liana Dobrogeană
  • sandpit
  • orchids, especially in April–May
  • old-growth forest habitat and atmosphere

From photography and the traditional village life of Letea: houses made of adobe, wood and reed, sandy lanes, old fences, domestic animals and the atmosphere of a place that still retains the old rhythm of the Delta.

This evening, at sunset, we will have one of the most special sessions of the tour: photography with the wild horses of Letea in warm contre-jour light.

This is one of those moments when you're not just photographing an animal, but an atmosphere: fine dust, low light, silhouettes, movement and freedom.

The rhythm of the tour

Every day is built around light and bird behaviour.

In general, the programme includes:

  • early morning photoshoot, in the best light
  • Lunch break, rest and photo discussion
  • Afternoon/evening photo session in warm sunset light

In the Danube Delta, we mainly work from a low-profile photo boat.
In Letea, we use a safari-type vehicle and, where appropriate, camouflage tents.

Between sessions, we can discuss settings, composition, light, animal behaviour and how you can build a stronger visual story, not just isolated images.

Brief itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Tulcea and transfer to the Danube Delta

Meeting at Tulcea Port – „Ivan Patzaichin” Quay, at 3:30 PM.

We'll set off by boat towards the Mila 23 area, and have our first photo session en route. Right from the first day, you might spot herons, pelicans, seagulls, cormorants, beautiful reflections, and those first moments of light on the Delta's channels.

Evening: check-in, dinner and briefing for the following days.

Days 2–3 – Bird and wildlife photography in the Danube Delta

Two days dedicated to photography in the heart of the Danube Delta.

We'll set off before sunrise to be in position when the first light hits the water. The routes will be adapted depending on the weather, light, wind, and bird activity.

I photograph canals, lakes, reeds, and quiet areas, observing natural behaviours, birds in flight, portraits, reflections, and habitat shots.

After dinner, optionally, we can have discussions about the photos taken, settings, composition, and field techniques.

Day 4 – Letea: salt marshes, forest, dunes, traditional village and wild horses

Day 4 is dedicated to the Letea area, one of the most diverse and spectacular areas of the Delta.

We will explore salt marshes, sandy areas and open habitats, where we can photograph waders, ferruginous duck, avocet, black-winged stilt, sanderling, lesser kestrel, bee-eaters, hoopoes, wrynecks and other species.

We will visit Letea Forest, with its ancient oak trees, sand dunes, and rare vegetation, then we will photograph the traditional village and the authentic atmosphere of the place.

The evening is set aside for a special session with the wild horses, in the warm glow of the sunset.

Accommodation and meals will be in the village, with traditional local dishes.

Day 5 – Last photo session and return to Tulcea

This morning we have the last photo session on the way back to Tulcea.

Sometimes, the most beautiful encounters happen just when you think the tour is over, so the camera stays ready until the end.

The tour concludes around midday in Tulcea.
